Teeth Whitening – The Brighter, Whiter Smile you Always Wanted
Everybody loves a bright white smile, and there are a variety of products and procedures on the market and in your dental office to help you achieve this look. Some are satisfied with daily oral hygiene, along with routine dental cleanings with a hygienist or general dental office, others like to go beyond this to make their smile look brighter, and more beautiful. They may choose to use products sold in stores such as whitening strips, whitening tooth pastes, etc. Some go the route of professionally made whitening trays (fabricated by your doctor) or in-office whitening procedures such as the popular Zoom (as seen on Extreme Makeover). Whitening strips and toothpastes can seem to be more cost effective, but end up being more expensive, considering they take much longer to achieve the desired whiteness.
The first step would be to speak with your dentist. Dr. Moghimi likes to do an examination before fabricating custom whitening trays or doing the in-office whitening procedures. Whitening your teeth may not correct all types of discoloration. For example, yellow-ish teeth will probably whiten well, while brown-ish teeth may whiten less, and grayish-hued teeth may not whiten well at all. If you’ve had composite fillings placed on your front teeth the whitening procedures will not affect the color of these materials, and they will most likely stand out on your newly whitened smile. In these cases, cosmetic crowns and veneers can be a good option.
If you are a candidate for whitening, Elegant Dentistry offers the following procedures/products:
In-office whitening – This procedure is called chairside whitening and usually requires only one office visit. During this visit, your teeth are polished with pumice (to remove any surface plaque that may affect the whitening), then covered by a gingival barrier (to ensure no whitening gel touches your soft tissue). After the proper precautions have been taken and everything but your teeth has been covered, the whitening gel can be placed on your teeth. The whitening procedure consists of three 15 minute sessions (all done in the same visit). Your shade is taken before and after so that you can see the results of the procedure. This type of whitening is the most popular at Elegant Dentistry. We currently offer the Zoom whitening system, as well as the Pola Office Plus system. The Zoom uses a whitening lamp, along with 22% whitening gel, while the Pola Office Plus does not require a lamp.
Take home whitening trays – Dr. Moghimi fabricates custom whitening trays for her patients. These trays are molded to your own teeth, and are used with whitening gel which is placed inside the trays. While whitening trays do take longer than the in-office whitening, they are very effective when used over time. These custom trays are also recommended for touching up the in-office whitening, or brightening your smile before a big event.
We oftentimes have whitening promotions, which can make having a beautiful smile very affordable.
